Kids and art go hand in hand as kids are all about creativity, imagination and creation. And speaking of creation, Erin Boniferro, local artist and art teacher, is about to open Collage Collage, a workshop, store and gallery with a pint-sized focus near Fraser and 15th.  This is just across the street from Wee One Reruns, down the block from Les Faux Bourgeois and right next door to RubyDog’s Art House, and we were lucky enough to get a sneak peek ahead of time.

The whole space centers around a long wooden table where their workshops (and birthday parties) will be hosted. Boniferro knows that introducing kids to the arts makes for healthier, motivated, open-minded thinkers and she’s excited about local artists  visiting the shop and taking part in the classes which are all about exploration, inspiration and engagement.  For fall 2009 they’re offering everything from “drop in make” art exploration workshops for two- and three-year-olds to “make” mixed media classes and “paint” painting and drawing classes for the  three to five set to “make” classes for kids from six to eight and eight to 12, so there’s bound to be something that appeals to your child. Each class is limited to eight kids, allowing space and attention for each little attendee.

For the shop side of things, Boniferro wanted to stock items that gave an experience – a book to be constantly re-read, crayons to draw myriad pictures, a sketch book to be filled over time. So the shelves are laden with lovely goodies like she Stockmar’s beeswax block and stick crayons, Lyra pencil crayons, independently-published colouring books, lovely story books and handmade dolls and toys from  the likes of Thistledown Studios, Amis de Montagne and more. And she also carries art supplies, everything from ribbons and stickers to feathers, pom-poms and pipe cleaners, set up country store style so you can pick and choose just what you need.

Even though Collage Collage isn’t quite open, you can register for their fall classes now and Boniferro will be throwing a big opening soiree on Saturday, September 12th from 2 pm – 4 pm with cupcakes and crafts – but of course.

My three year old is in Erin’s painting class at Collage Collage and loves it. She also sells pom poms at the store, which I can’t leave without.

We have been attending the toddler drop-in class on Tuesday mornings … my 2.5 yr old BOY sits for the whole hour cuz the art supplies are so yummy … and I don’t mean to eat! We also dropped by on a Friday after school and my 6 and 5 yr olds also did some neat stuff … and have been asking to go back. I live around Fraser and B’way and it is great to have such a terrific kids’ service in the ‘hood. (and the coffee & perfectly parissienne choc croissants at Le Faux Bourgeois on the opposite corner before the Tuesday class on tuesdays make it a perfect day.)
