bts: pint-sized accessories
In the lead up to back to school we’ve covered clothes and lunchbags and backpacks, but what about those all important accessories that pull it all together? Here are a few of our useful, fun favourites for fall.
Livie & Luca’s lovely baby, toddler and kids’ shoes are mum-designed and combine bright colours, bold designs and a bit of whimsy with lots of comfort. And they’re made by hand too, which makes their reasonable price tag even more surprising. With an eye to their carbon footprint the company only uses left-over high-quality leather that would otherwise be discarded, to create hard-wearing shoes that are sturdy enough for everyday but pretty enough for parties.
Fun and funky kids’ umbrellas from Djeco combine form with function. In traditional Chinese umbrella style they have a bamboo frame covered with waterproof fabric and they multi-task too, protecting against both sun and rain. And since an umbrella is a necessary accessory in Vancouver, it’s always nice to get one that you love, because you’ll be using it a lot.
Coloured Pencils from O’Bon combine green thinking with an educational edge. Made from 100% recycled newsprint, each colour is named after an animal and sports its own painted-on animal design. And while that’s all great, what we love most about them are the clean, vibrant colours, plus the fact that they’re easy to sharpen. And we’re convinced they last way longer than regular pencil crayons. But if coloured pencils aren’t on your back to school supply list, O’Bon also make also equally eco-friendly, though less fancy, regular pencils.
Not every child needs a belt, but if you’ve got a child whose pants just don’t stay up no matter what, then the buckled belts that Canadian company Kula Klips has just introduced may solve your problems. They’re only just hitting the stores but we’ve seen them in person and we like the funky prints and robust construction. Plus the style takes us back to the ‘80s, in a good way.
P.S.: Looking for where to buy these products? We only cover products that are easily available in Canada, so we either link directly to a store that carries the product or if we link directly to a company’s website we always make sure that you can find a list of Canadian retailers on their “where to buy” or “stores” page. And if you’re in a bind you can always email us and we’ll point you in the right direction.
Here are other accessories we’ve covered that would also be great for back to school:
