bts: tote by rote
Filed Under Going Green, Stuff | August 24, 2009
Whether your child’s going to daycare, preschool or starting kindergarten, there’s lots of thing they need to tote about with them. Everything from spare diapers, to knickers and outfits to lunch and snacks. So we’ve searched out safe, styling options for everything from backpacks to lunch boxes.
Fleurville’s Kid’s Messenger is great for kids who are starting kindergarten. It can be set up as either a messenger bag or a backpack, it’s funky and hard-wearing (we put it the test of a full year of school and it’s still going strong), and, like all products from Fleurville, it’s PVC-, Teflon- and lead-free. It also comes with an insulated lunch bag and has lots of pockets and pouches for water bottles, pencils and notebooks. Our adult sensibilities also appreciate their not-too-cutesy patterns and prints.
Lunch boxes have come a long way in the last few years. Two of our current favourites are the Balanced Day Lunch Kit and the OOTS Lunchbox. The Balanced Day Lunch Kit was developed with two different compartments to ensure it’s easy for kids to know what to eat for lunch and what’s for snack time. It comes with a BPA-free metal water bottle and handy, made-to-fit eco-containers. Design-minded parents will like OOTS’ sleek lunchboxes that combine style with functionality. They’re BPA- and phthalate-free and also come with custom-fit containers. The upright, stacking design means everything stays in place and there’s even a strap to affix your water bottle snugly on top. Both these boxes come in colours and prints that’ll appeal to both genders. Please note, we have not personally tested these lunch boxes but are relying on great feedback we’ve gotten about them.
And if you need storage for snacks rather than lunches, look no farther than the LunchBots Pico. A two-sided 100% stainless steel right down to the coloured lid, which is coated with a non-VOC finish, we’re finding our Pico a perfect size for snacks. In fact it’s so handy that we’ve purloined it for ourselves. LunchBots also has a range of different sized containers that are perfect for snacks, wraps and sandwiches. They are best for solid food however, they’re not waterproof.
Tomorrow we’ll have some healthy ideas for snacks to fill up all these fab bags with. And next week in BTS we’ll be covering accessories.
Here are other safer storing options we’ve covered that would also be great for back to school:

Another great lunch bag option is; Kids Konserve. Also green but very cute! They are being sold locally at; Choices on W. 16th, Hip Baby on 4th Ave, soon at Front & Co. on Main St. and at the Good Planet Baby Co. in Victoria.
We’re loving our LapTop Lunches! I’ve even got one for myself so I can pack all our lunches together in the morning and us parents have healthy lunches to go, as well. :)
