“Treasure this precious time,” say the grandparents. “They grow up so fast,” reflect the parents of teenagers. The days may seem long, but the years are short and new parents quickly realize how fast their babies grow and change into each new phase of life. Photos are one of the best ways we have of capturing the sweetness of each precious phase in their lives.
With a digital camera in hand, we click away, hoping that at least a few photos will capture the beauty of the child in front of us. However we don’t always succeed, so here are a few tips from professional photographers on how to make the most of your efforts:
Keep it Simple: Black and white photography is usually your best choice, according to photographer Sandra Vander Schaaf, as it helps our eyes read the emotion of an image. Photographer Nancy George agrees, “Black and white keeps it simple – makes it true – and if you’re lucky, beautiful.”
Tell a Story: Newborns are most often found in our arms, so why not capture this reality in your photos? Sandra Vander Schaaf finds that babies are “more relaxed in the comfort of an embrace. The story of the newborn is one of nurture and intimacy.”
Sweet Moments: Babies can be the sweetest, and sometimes most challenging subjects. Photographer Morgaine Owens suggests that you capture your child while sleeping, allowing for delicate poses and a peaceful image that “speaks directly to our hearts and shows that every new life is a work of art.” She suggests a warm home, gentle movements, a fully tummy, swaddling, and white noise to help baby slumber away while you click your heart out.
What better reason to brush up on your photography skills than capturing the beauty of your children? Investing in a good camera (and reading the manual) can make all the difference.
