Another (hot) summer long weekend is upon us, and that means lots of travelling. And the 5th Edition of the Lonely Planet’s Travel with Children has just been released. Admittedly it came out a little later than they’d hoped, but it’s still just in time to make the rest of your summer travels a little easier.

For a relatively small book, it’s packed with huge amounts of info that’s been tried and tested by their crack team of parent-authors. Handily colour-coded into sections such as ‘On The Road’, ‘Types of Adventure’ and ‘Destinations’ you’ll find practical advice for every step of your vacation from pre-planning to easy, low-on-props games to keep kids entertained on the journey to the best child-friendly attractions to take in once you arrive.  It even includes health info on travelling while pregnant and breastfeeding.

Alas, we’re doing a lot more staycationing than vacationing these days, but that doesn’t mean we can’t read about top things to do in destinations as diverse as Europe (consult the oracle in Delphi) and Africa (lounge on a beach in Zanzibar) and dream a little dream of hopping on a jet plane.

All the useful info is interspersed with fascinating first-person travelers’ tales that may leave you both awed and inspired, as Virginia Maxwell’s account of travelling to Jordan with her three-year-old son did for us.

Most-importantly, Travel With Children recognizes that travelling with tots takes heaps of preparation and patience (and may require a post-holiday holiday to recover from your vacay), which is why our favourite part of the book is the initial ‘Before You Go’ section. In fact we’ve excerpted a whole section specific to the pros and cons of traveling with babies, crawlers, toddlers and preschoolers in our blog – just in time to help you out when heading out for your long weekend adventures.
