go with the flo

We’re all for our kids colouring outside the lines and expressing themselves through art, but, in general, colouring books today seem to be filled with licensed images that are less than artistically inspiring. That’s why when we come across something a little out of the ordinary we’re compelled to share. And Rosie Flo’s lovely colouring books – which are new to Canadian shores – are anything but ordinary.

Roz Streeten is the brains – and mum – behind Rosie Flo. She was inspired by sitting and drawing with her daughters who’d give her explicit instructions about what they wanted (mostly dresses) and then her girls would add in heads, arms and legs. Fascinated with how this pastime kept her girls engaged, Streeten created a series of colouring books of dresses with themes like Rosie Flo’s Garden and Rosie Flo’s Animals which combine flora and fauna with fashion.BabyBumps Fitness

Streeten also designed her books with good quality, thick paper so the colours don’t show through from page to page, and they’re a handy size for stowing away in your tot’s tote. Designed for children from four to twelve, we have to admit these books have renewed our waning interest in colouring. And though they’re probably more girl-friendly, boys may enjoy Rosie Flo’s Garden, and if not hopefully her Johnny Joe books will be available here soon too.

You can find Rosie Flo’s colouring books at fine bookstores everywhere, but we snagged ours from Front & Co.

We asked and you answered: When we ran Friday’s column on celebrity baby news we asked what you thought and you think that’s not what you subscribe to yoyomama for, so we’ll keep it as a one off. Unfortunately we got too many emails to respond to each and every one of you individually, but we wanted to thank you for sending along such great, measured feedback. You’re interested in local info and local mamas. To that end we’ll be reviving our monthly Mamas Rock columns and we have a few more surprises up our sleeves. And if you did chime in saying yes to gossip, we’d suggest you tune into Celebrity Baby Scoop every once in awhile.

And though we may not always ask, we’re always interested in your feedback on what you like and what you’re not so keen on, so feel free to email us anytime!

    Dear Yoyomama,

We’re always looking for better colouring books ourselves, especially as we don’t bring licensed characters into the home. Another resource we’ve found is National Geographic which has printable animal pictures to colour that my husband and I liked looking at too. (So *that’s* where the octopus’ mouth is!) Here’s the link: http://www.nationalgeographic.com/coloringbook/archive/

    Enjoy!

    Brenda
