the unusual suspects

Vancouver has heaps to offer in the way of family entertainment, for visitors and city dwellers alike. But with the summer holidays upon us, when we’re in the city we’re constantly thinking of ways to entertain our little darlings. Once the usual suspects – PNE, Science World, the Aquarium and Granville Island – have been done to death, here are a few lesser known activities to enjoy:

Kitsilano Showboat - Kits beach is undoubtedly one of the city’s hotspots. But what could be better than a late afternoon play in the sand or a beachside view of a basketball game, followed by a picnic supper at the Kitsilano showboat.  Spectacularly located by Kits pool, this outdoor stage was established in 1935 as a venue to encourage local amateur talent. Now, each summer the showboat is host to a heady mix of family-friendly dance, music and performance art shows every Monday, Wednesday and Friday evening beginning at 7.30pm – all tantalizingly free.  www.kitsilanoshowboat.com

Vancouver Public Library - The option of indoor family activities is a must in Vancouver, where the sun does not, unfortunately, always shine. Over the holidays VPL has much to offer, from the Summer Reading Club for all ages, with incentives to encourage our little ones along the way, to other exciting workshops such as Button Making, Game On (an afternoon of Wii or PS2 games), a scavenger hunt and the farm Team Puppet show. www.vpl.ca/cgi-bin/api/calendar.cgi

Vancouver Art Gallery - Also for those rainy days in the city, or even sunny ones, come to that, a whole new world of interactive art awaits families at the Vancouver Art Gallery.  Hands-on workshops, child-oriented tours and the new Family Fuse weekend program are on offer, all for the price of one adult entry ticket. www.vanartgallery.bc.ca/events_and_programs/children_family.html
