more must-haves
Last week we started our list of safe, convenient summer must-haves, but there were so many we had to go long, so here’s part two:
You make sure they’re wearing hats when they’re outside, but how do you protect their heads when they’re swimming? Faced with that problem Canadian mama Atar Morgenstern developed the Nammu, a sun protective swim cap. But rather than those old lady flower petal hats, these caps are sleek, fun and styled like a bandana. They’re one-size-fits all, which means they have a long shelf-life, and they also come in bright colours to help you spot your tot in a crowded pool.
After sunscreen, sunglasses may be the next important item in your must-have arsenal. Many experts believe that kids get 80% of their total lifetime exposure to UV rays by the time they hit 18, and the development of cataracts and other eye problems is linked to excessive exposure to UV radiation. As long as sunglasses for kids have lenses with 100% UV protection, you’re on the right track, but we’re especially fond of Baby Banz. They’re easy because they stay put, thanks to a wrap-around neoprene wrap rather than arms. And they offer 100% UVA/UVB protection.
While bugs and insects can be fascinating for kids, bug bites are not. Last year we gave you a run down of deet-free bug sprays and this year we wanted to add All Terrain’s Herbal Armour Kids to the list. We like its non-toxic combo of essential oils and non-greasy, water and sweat-resistant formulation. It’s also been clinically proven to be 100% effective against bugs for two hours. Admittedly bug season isn’t in full swing yet, so we haven’t been able to put it to the mosquito test, but we’ll keep you posted when we do.
