safer summer eating

There are so many useful safer eating options coming onto the market that we can hardly keep up. However, here are our newest tried, tested and true faves:

Give peace a chance: Smiling Planet’s plates are not only made from 100% recycled medical grade polypropylene plastic – which exceeds the FDA’s standards for food contact – and BPA, lead, PVC and phthalate-free, but they’re also lovely in a way that appeals to the aesthetics of both parent and child. Olivia Haviland d’Albis’ unique artwork whimsically connects peace, nature and the cosmos, and her designs are printed on the plates with non-toxic ink making the artwork scratchproof. The plate’s raised rim helps kids keep their food where it belongs and makes the plates easy to stack and store. All that and dishwasher safe too. Available from www.raspberrykids.com

Bubblicious: our pint-sized testers declared these stainless steel straws “bubblicious”, but we’re more impressed by the whole non-plastic, reusable, dishwasher-safe straw option. For kid-sized cups we like the 6.95″ versions, while we’re quite taken with the longer, 9.45″ straws for our own summer sipping. Rumour has it they’re great for cocktails too. All the straws come with a built in bend, making drinking easier, and we think these would make great party favours. Available from The Tickle Trunk.

Better baggies: while we love our handy little stainless steel food containers for snacks on the go, they’re not always the lightest or most flexible for toting around, so 4myearth’s sandwich and snack pockets offer a useful, safe alternative. Made of polyester that’s manufactured with no harmful substances present, they’re lined with TPU, an environmentally-friendly PVC and phthalate-free, non-toxic coating that meets FDA standards. The pockets come in bright, fun patterns and each one has a handy nametag built into the lining. And while they’re not dishwasher safe, they can be hand washed or machine washed in cold water and they dry fast. 4MyEarth also makes sandwich and snack wraps, but we prefer the pockets for keeping everything tidily contained. Available from www.envirostyles.ca.

And all these are timely seasonal options as they’re perfectly unbreakable for al fresco dining and picnics.
