What’s one of first questions many doctors get from mamas-to-be? Rumour has it they want to know if they can still colour their hair. And while getting streaks or colour isn’t verboten when you’re gestating – although most experts recommend avoiding it if possible during the first trimester – it’s still a bit of a grey area.

And the more you research hair colour, the more conflicting info you find on everything from cancer risk to concerns over long-term exposure. There are doctors who recommend never colouring your hair at all while others say it’s perfectly safe. But as a stylist who developed an allergy to ammonia, Urs Eichenberger, the creative genius (and quite a character) behind Gastown’s Strands Vancouver, had to find alternatives if he wanted to continue dying and plying his trade.

His research led him to conclude that not everything that is natural works or is safe, while  not everything chemical is evil, so he focused on using ammonia-free products that are biodegradable, not tested on animals, and contain no animal or human ingredients. And they’re nanotechnology-free as well.

Speaking of grey areas, the grey in our hair proliferated post baby, and while we’re somewhat willing to suffer for beauty, we wouldn’t mind doing it in a safer way. After all, shouldn’t we treat our bodies as carefully as we treat those of our babes? So we put our hair into Urs’ hands. Not only did he wash that grey right out of our hair, but we got more compliments on the colour and cut than we’ve had in ages. Plus, despite a triple process, our hair felt fabulous and was shiny and healthy and happy.

You’ll find hair health hints on the Stands site and at the salon you can also stock up on safer hair and skincare products including tolunene, formaldehyde and phthalate-free nail polish and even Wysi™ Wipes .
