goodie bag good-ies

Goodie bags for birthday parties can be the bane of a mama’s existence. If you’re hyper-organized then you plan ahead for a fabulously themed bag that ends up costing you more than the rest of the party combined. Alternately you end up cobbling together something random at the last minute. Wherever you fall in that spectrum, we suspect you’ll be taken, as we were, with this new-to-Canada product that’s got goodie bag potential written all over it.
German company Calafant designs cardboard toys made of recyclable material. For just $8.95 they have a great collection of goodie bag crafts – everything from a sports car to a carriage – that don’t just include the craft, but also a selection of felts to decorate it with. Basic structure aside, each toy is practically a blank slate awaiting your child’s imagination and artistic flourishes to make it unique.
And these aren’t one-offs to be toyed with and then discarded either. They’re solid and lend themselves to ongoing hours of play. They’re also the perfect size to fit your tot’s current crop of Playmobil. And when your toy does finally succumb to overenthusiastic kiddie play, just recycle it.
You can also go all out and gift the guest of honour with Calafant’s lovely tree house. It’s an amazing combo of eco-craft and toy, that will initially keep your child busy decorating it and becomes a great home for everyone from pirates to princesses. Just a note, it works best if your child decorates it first and then you assemble it – which takes about 20 minutes. When finished it’s about two feet high, light, portable and equally fun for girls and boys. We must admit we’ve taken a few turns exploring its magical nooks and crannies ourselves.
After all, what does a child love to play with more than a cardboard box? Calafant has just taken that to the next level.
