it’s sprig time

Eco-friendly toy company Sprig burst onto the scene with their kid-powered Sprig Rig last year.  They followed that with a collection of Eco-Trucks, but their newest offering, the Sprig Hollow line, is our favourite to date.

Simple, chunky and slightly kooky, the inhabitants of Sprig Hollow lend themselves to open ended play. Like all Sprig toys they’re made of Sprigwood, a composite plastic containing both recycled plastic and reclaimed wood. The new line includes the Bee & Butterfly Farm,  a Dunebug Sand Truck and a Dragonfly Heliscooter, all aimed at kids of three and up. Each set also comes with a few wildflower seed-laden paper flowers that you can plant indoors or out with your kidlets.

We put the Bee & Butterfly Farm through its paces. A farmhouse, funnel and chute, two insects, beehive and farm truck, this combo seriously multi-tasks. It’s not only equally at home in the bathtub, the sandbox or the living room, but the insects’ faces and wings are interchangeable, the truck’s hood doubles as a sand rake, the beehive makes a great mini-shower in the bath and the easy-access farm house could be a picnic bench, toy shelf or whatever else your tiny tot could imagine. The one flaw we found was that the funnel and chute do not stay locked into place.

This set would  set you up for summer time, it’s light and portable enough to tote bits and pieces wherever you go – the beach, the park, Grandmas…plus there are enough bits that the farm could be shared – we won’t necessarily claim easily – by two kids.

Some adult assembly is required to put it all together initially, but when Sprig says assembly is easy, they actually mean it, unlike some furniture companies who shall remain nameless.

Note: currently you’ll only find Sprig Hollow Toys locally at the Granville Island Toy Company  – and at EP!C this weekend – but they’ll be more widely available soon.
