Before your babe is born your vision of breastfeeding may include a glow of contentment and a vintage rocking chair. Ours did. But the reality involved cracked nipples, mastitis and the woes of trying to get our baby latched.  Like us, most women have only limited exposure to breastfeeding before giving birth, so how do you get prepared to breastfeed? Here are a few of our favourite simple steps to improve your chances of a healthy breastfeeding experience from the get go:

Learn More: Entering parenthood with a solid base of info on breastfeeding can be a significant source of support in the months to come.  If you’re in the Lower Mainland, consider attending a Breastfeeding Class with respected Lactation Consultant Renee Hefti.

Connect with Mothers: Pregnant women are welcome at La Leche League meetings.  These gatherings of mothers at all stages of breastfeeding are a wonderful way to learn and connect with others.  Click here to find a free group in your area.

Get Help: Have the name and phone number of local certified lactation consultant available should you need expert advice postpartum. Ask your friends, your local health unit or your doctor for recommendations. And renowned Canadian breastfeeding expert Dr. Jack Newman has excellent  handouts online, including this handy PDF – Breastfeeding – Starting Out Right.

But no matter how informed you are, sometimes breastfeeding is just hard.  Both you and baby are learning together, and like most relationships, it can take time and attention to thrive. The key to a positive breastfeeding experience is quality information and support.  If you have challenges along the way, don’t hesitate to ask for help, and know that the day will come when you’ll breastfeed your baby with confidence and ease.
