on the road again

To us the Victoria Day long weekend signifies the start of summer road trips. And just in time to help while away the hours in the car trying to keep your tots entertained comes Agent Story’s new CD, Agent Story: Tales from the Briefcase.
Agent Story, aka local mama and educational storyteller Laura Thomas, has always loved writing stories and poems. When Thomas became a mother she realized she wanted her daughter to have confidence to follow her dreams, but to instill that confidence in her child, Thomas had to follow her own dreams too. And so Agent Story was born.
Tales from the Briefcase is Thomas’s first CD and it’s packed with interactive stories, rhymes and imaginary play that had our tots following along by the end of the first song and insisting they drag the CD with them on all their adventures. The content is tuned into the pre- and primary school curriculum, integrating literacy, math, science, social studies and physical activity into the mix.
We must admit, some of the tales seemed a titch heavy handed to us, but then three-year-olds aren’t known for the subtlety and we’d still give Tales from the Briefcase two thumbs up as a roadside companion for your travels. You can get a great feel for the Agent from the video clips on her site.
And if you’re approaching your summer travels with some trepidation, check out local mama Claudia Laroye’s blog, The Travelling Mom. Billed as a modern mom’s guide to travel sanity with your family, she doesn’t just include handy tips like how to pack your suitcase and a useful packing list, but she also talks about why family travel is important. Something that will be a useful read when you’re madly packing for four people at midnight and wondering why you ever thought hitting the road was a good idea in the first place…
