finally!

We’ve been watching and waiting for the Whole Foods on Cambie at 8th to open for what seems like forever and today the wait is over. We did get a sneak peek at the store ahead of time and we’re happy to report it wholly lived up to our expectations.
First off the store is huge. Over 5000 square feet. And LEED certified with a very cool living wall at the entrance. Inside it has everything you’d expect and more. The coffee bar is nestled next to a gelato bar carrying Salt Spring Gelato. The cheese section is a turophile’s (that’s cheese lover for those of you who don’t know your Greek) dream and you’ll find all sorts of family friendly goodies like Onyx’s stainless steel containers and lots of i play kid’s products including their infamous swimsuits with a built in swim diaper.
So if you’re looking for something to do today with your tot, why not grab a girlfriend and pop on in for a coffee for mama and an ice cream for your babe? You can take a store tour – they’re on the hour starting at 10 am til 3 pm, sample lots of treats or catch a live performances by Hayley Bonar at 3 and 6:30 pm.
Other upcoming events include this Sunday’s Benefit Barbeque from 11 am til 2 pm in support of the Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House, chef demos and Mindfully Feeding Babies and Toddlers on May 8th with Victoria Pawlowski.
Obviously we’re happy that they’re open, but we’re more than a little worried that our budget’s going to seriously suffer. Which is why we think we’ll sign up for one of their Eat Well for Less tours this Thursday.

From Sarah at Dancing Star Birth, who couldn’t leave a comment for some reason:
We’re excited about Whole Foods too, but even more so about what’s upstairs:
The new Cross Roads clinic – with a full range of health services including a first in this city – both Cross Roads Obstetrics and Open Door Midwifery are sharing one clinic space.
Dancing Star Birth is proud to now offer Birthing From Within prenatal classes at Cross Roads Clinic. To learn more you can visit our website at http://www.dancingstarbirth.ca or call us at 604 254 1100.
who cares about how big the new grocery store is? NOT ME. (i dislike the commercial aspect of this post)
Hi Barbara – thanks for your feedback. I must admit I’ve had a crush on Whole Foods ever since I walked into the Union Square Store in NYC so what was just enthusiasm may have come across as commercial. I like the ready to eat choices they offer, their in store brand which allows you to make healthier choices for less, and the fact that their cheese guys know their cheeses and their natural living people know their products. They also offer products I know our readers like (like i play for example) that are hard to find elsewhere.
As for the size – it’s astonishingly large – one of the first things we noticed, so that’s why we included that nugget of info.
Would I do my everyday grocery shopping here? No. But it’s a great addition to the neighborhood and the Living Wall itself is worth checking out.
Thanks,
Annemarie
