true blue

We’ve been talking green all week, but did you know that blue is the new green? Why? Because all environmental issues come back to water and how we use, and misuse, it. So to wrap up earth week at yoyomama we have some products to help you save it, drink it and play with it.
Amazingly, showering accounts for 30% of the water use in the home. How fast can you shower, shave, condition and do all your best thinking? Use Ripple’s Digital Shower Timer as a way to keep track of how much time and water you’re whiling away. The ripple attaches to your wall via a strong suction cup and is – of course – water and steam proof and offers both a clock and timer function. It took us a few tries to get the hang of setting it, but once we figured it out, we found it works a treat for timing the two minutes you’re supposed to brush your teeth for too.
Do you drink your tap water straight? We do and aside from the chlorine we like it. However, if you let your water sit, the chlorine dissipates. Now this is a bit of a splurge, but the Superfustinox Liquid Dispenser is very cool. Made of food-grade stainless steel you can use it to store and transport water (or anything from oil to honey). It also comes with a spigot, so why not snag one of these, fill it from your tap and store it in the fridge for cold, chlorine-free water? Imagine how cool you’ll seem when you show up at picnics this summer toting one of these?
The thought of BPAs leaching out of bath toys into the warm water in which our tots are cavorting fills us with dread. So we were happy to see that Boon’s new line of bath toys is BPA-, Phthalate- and PVC-Free. They’re also fun. Our favourites are the Water Bugs which engages our kids’ imaginations – are they bugs, or spiders or octopi - and keeps them busy in the tub for ages.
We hope they’ll start selling water credits soon though, as we’ll need to buy up some of our hubby’s, he’s the king of the short shower, and we’re well, not…
Check out Elizabeth Royte’s Bottlemania site for more about going blue. Her water links page offers heaps of resources.
