sipping in style

Having kids inspires so many mums to take up eco-friendly enterprises that perhaps their tots should start getting kickbacks. Oh wait, they already do – all the cool stuff their mums create to step more lightly on the earth and try to keep it in good shape for them when they’re older. Fill Your Own and Otterbottles – two new lines of stainless steel, BPA-free bottles – are great cases in point.

Fill Your Own Both companies are Canadian-based, give back to the community and combine sustainability with style. Local mum Annette Yang has recently launched  Fill Your Own. With four different sizes of bottles and three different caps – a straw cap, a sports spout cap and a twist cap – all embellished with artwork from different local artists (including Yang herself) there’s a combo for almost everyone.

We’ve put the 500 ml bottles with straw caps to the kid-test and they met our aesthetic, green and practical needs. We weren’t sure about washing the cord on the cap, but it seems to be fine, and while the bottles and caps are top rack dishwasher safe, hand washing is recommended to extend the life of the artwork.

OtterbottlesOtterbottles are the creation of Alberta mum Shannon Andrukow. Available in three different sizes, each bottle has a twist lid and a sport lid with a fun pattern that adds an extra oomph. We mum-tested the 750 ml bottle and it did take us awhile to get the hang of their twist lid which initially resulted in some serious leaks. We don’t like the germ aspect of touching the area around the drinking spout of the twist lid with our fingers to open and close it, but the size and weight of the bottle is great. So is the fact that it’s dishwasher safe, although they recommend hand washing their lids.

So if you want to sip safely with lots of style, one of these funky bottles is bound to appeal. And luckily Vancouver tap water is so delicious that you need look no farther than the kitchen sink to fill ‘er up.
