cool as ice

In honour of Earth Day on the 22nd and TV Turn Off Week this week, from the 20th to 26th, we’re all about products and ideas that are environmentally-friendly and help connect you and your family to the world around you. Starting with Onyx’s stainless steel ice cube trays.
Why are we so excited about these? Well, after you’ve carefully pureed your lovingly simmered, organic, non-gmo baby food your only choice to date has been to pop it into plastic ice cube trays or other plastic containers to freeze. Which just goes against the grain.
The creation of a local mompreneur, these two-part trays were inspired by the aluminum ice cube trays of old and put us in mind of ’50s mums cracking out ice cubes to pop into their husband’s drinks at the end of the day. We’ve tested them with ice and also applesauce and they worked a treat with both, although if anything they worked better for the puree than regular old ice. Something to do with the density apparently.
Here’s a peon to the aluminum version that has some handy tips on how to get the most out of your metal ice cube tray.
At $25 they’re not cheap, but they are super solid and will last forever, unless you choose to recycle yours for some reason. And they are 100% recyclable. Besides, you only need one tray to churn out lots and lots of yummy, homemade treats for your tiny tots. Or cubes for your après bedtime drink of choice.

Note: you’ll also find lots of other great stainless steel options at the Tickle Trunk including storage containers and great little stainless steel cups that you might have seen or used at Little Nest.
