read it and reap

We wanted to approach Earth Day from a slightly different viewpoint, and celebrate with a review of a few books that can skew your family’s perspective of the world, hopefully for the better:
How We See the World: Duck Rabbit by Amy Krouse Rosenthal and Tom Lichtenheld
Remember those images that looked like either a woman’s face or a vase depending on your perspective? Well here’s a modern, kid-friendly take on that optical illusion that’ll help your tots realize that everyone sees the world differently. Plus you’ll have lots of lively arguments as to whether it is a duck or a rabbit. Younger kids will like the story but kids of four and up are more likely to “get” the sight gag.
How We Affect the World: Food Matters: A Guide to Conscious Eating With More Than 75 Recipes by Mark Bittman
We’ve been huge Mark Bittman fans ever since we got our hands on a copy of How to Cook Everything, so we were chomping at the bit to read Food Matters. A practical cook, Bittman is also a practical environmentalist, setting out a plan for responsible eating that’s good for you, the planet and your wallet. Hmm? Can one small book do all that? Well, if you’re someone who is already aware of what and how you consume (and open to eating more beans and whole grains) than probably. Oh, and the recipes are yummy too.
How We Create Community: We Generation – Raising Socially Responsible Kids by Michael Unger
Unger, a Canadian author, looks at moving kids away from “me, mine and more” to “us, ours and enough”. Unger takes a big picture view of social responsibility that goes far beyond kids donating their allowance. We Generation combines his own experience working with families and children, along with expert research. The result is a compelling case for creating a family culture that nurtures compassion, connections and community.
