kids just wanna go green

The next generation of earth-saving superheroes can start adventuring by learning to go green. Earth Day is tomorrow and we’ve got some great ways you and your kids can celebrate:

The art of recycling: Turn your old tin cans into new herb pots. Carefully wash and dry cans, then sand off any sharp edges. Paint the outside with white craft paint (let dry) and then set your kids loose to decorate them as they like. Little ones can use stickers while older children can paint their favourite landscape. After the pots are done, spray them with acrylic sealer spray – be sure to ask for an eco-friendly, non toxic one though! Poke holes in the bottom of the can with a screwdriver, add a layer of rocks and fill two-thirds with soil. Let the kiddies plant herbs in their new containers, and add sun and water. Enjoy!

Scavenger hunt: Tikes of all ages enjoy trekking through the woods, especially when there are games afoot. For babies and toddlers, try a tactile scavenger hunt. Brush their hands with furry moss, tickle their toes with tender grass and touch their cheeks with the soft, smooth kiss of a flower petal. For older children, try an alphabet scavenger hunt. Each of you can name something seen on the walk, starting with the letter a for, perhaps, acorn, and then b for butterfly or beetle, and so on.

100-mile meal: Introduce your wee ones to regional cuisine by making a meal with local food. Play a little game of show and tell – show your kids each ingredient and tell them where it comes from. Try to keep within 100 miles of Vancouver. Then let the kids help you create your West Coast culinary masterpiece. If you want to win extra eco-brownie points, make it a vegetarian dish. Locally made ice cream (from companies like Island Farms) with a bit of local fruit and honey is an easy, tasty vegetarian treat.

See, maybe it is easy being green?
