When you’re stocking up on gear for your impending arrival, the array of slings and carriers to choose from can be dizzying. And when we discovered that chiropractors feel that one of the most common carriers out there is bad for your baby’s spine we decided to take a few more ergonomically designed options out for a spin. As for slings, we haven’t gone there yet…
The ERGObaby is the carrier most mums rave out. It can be used from infancy until your child’s 40 lbs and we like how it distributes the weight rather than having everything rest on your shoulders. Babies love sleeping in the ERGO as they’re moulded to your body, and you’ll enjoy the cuddles too. The little hood the ERGO comes with also shields your baby from light and the other fascinating distractions in the world, making it easier for them to concentrate on sleeping. When your child is older you can also position the ERGO so your baby’s on your back. We do wish it had an outward facing option though.
A newer entry into the market, the Belle Baby Carrier, is designed for babes from eight to 30 lbs. It’s a lightweight carrier that packs up very small and is great for slipping on in a hurry when you’re trying to get things done around the house. You can also use it with your baby facing inward or outward. And we love that the adjustable waist belt is made from recycled yoga mats. The Belle is so portable that it’s great for tossing in your diaper bag or the bottom of your stroller, however we didn’t find it great for long stretches of time, as it put too much strain on our backs.
Both carriers come in organic and non-organic options, but we’re partial to going organic as babies seem to view carriers as chew toys. And we can’t say enough good things about the whole hands-free aspect of carriers, which makes juggling another child or groceries or any of the other myriad aspects of motherhood easier.
For more on the benefits of baby wearing and what to look for in a carrier check out this article from Dr. Stephanie Bonn that originally aired on yoyomama last summer.

Let us know what you think or share your great finds with us so we can share them with other Vancouver mothers!

The Ergo is fabulous! It’s my husband’s favorite. For a forward facing option (many babies like this) you could try a mei tai. They are incredibly comfortable and allow for more versatility in wearing options. :)
Can you tell us what common carrier is bad for babies or perhaps site the article or source for that information? Thanks.
