Spring break looms next week, and even if it doesn’t directly affect your tot’s schedule, it could affect your planning as you may well want to bypass the sort of places that will be packed with day camps or perhaps you’re planning a trip yourself. Whether it’s serious day tripping, jetting off to sunnier climes or its business as usual, sharing the load is never a bad idea. After all, you’re never packing light when you’re packing kids, so why not put them to work toting their own essentials – a blankie, a stuffy, their favourite book, a water bottle – in their own bag? If it’s a Little Kid Pack from Dante Beatrix it won’t seem like work at all.

These whimsical backpacks for kids from two to five come adorned with a collection of ten different animals, one of which is bound to take your tot’s fancy. Your junior surfer may be drawn to Nigel the Shark; woodland lovers will covet Jean-Pierre, a sassy squirrel; and we predict that Esther the Bunny will be an Easter hit. We love it that most of the packs have unisex appeal with nary a princess or truck in sight.

Made of nylon with padded straps and one large interior space that includes a little pocket for an ID card or a few small treasures, the packs are sturdy and durable. Which means that Droolie the Doggie will always be loved, because you can pass him along to a sibling or cousin when your child has outgrown him. Or the backpack.

After all even if you’re going nowhere more exciting than daycare, there’s no reason you shouldn’t do it with a bit of preschool panache.

Just a note: Its important kids don’t carry too heavy a load in their backpacks, here are a few ideas for making sure your child avoids backpack strain.

As for Spring Break, we’ll have more ideas for keeping busy later in the week…
