snakes and snails and puppy dog tails

Sometimes it seems that boys get short shrift. Their clothes aren’t as cute. Their accessories aren’t as varied. And their mums need an extensive education in trucks and trains before they can “get” their tots’ play. But local author, educator and counsellor Barry McDonald is all about boys. His book Boy Smarts – Mentoring Boys for Success at School offers practical guidelines for meeting boys’ varied learning needs.

But, as we touched upon last Tuesday, books often go unread. Which is why we wanted to let you know about MacDonald’s upcoming workshop on Saturday, April 25th on East Broadway. His workshops almost always sell out, so we wanted to give you lots of advance notice.  Entitled How to Talk so Boys will Listen, and Listen so Boys will Talk (again, shades of last Tuesday), the four-hour workshop gives parents practical and specific advice on how we can talk so boys will pay attention and understand; how to mentor our sons to become caring, courageous and ethical men; and how to work with school staff to help boys be more successful learners.

If you can’t make it – or even if you can – his newsletter is full of lots of useful info (you can sign up for it at the bottom of each page on his site) and you’ll find heaps of useful, boy-oriented resources on his site including articles, a toolbox packed with handy links, and practical information on parenting boys.

Earlybird rates for the workshop are available until April 9th, and your registration fee includes a copy of the book.  MacDonald also has some parent evening presentations coming up around the Lower Mainland this spring.

Because boys will be boys just doesn’t cut it anymore.

Happy to know about this upcoming workshop. I’ll mention it in my blog as well.
