Storytelling may be a dying art, but once you’ve read these multi-layered, multi-cultural books a few times you’ll have them memorized and be ready to spin a yarn with no book on hand. Put this useful skill into play when you’re walking with a whiny child or encouraging them to take one more bite of their broccoli. And who knows, you may even get inspired to create stories all of your own or tell your own family’s tales.

Here’s a fun fact. Toothbrushes left on the counter are subject to whatever lurks in the air, including the water droplets that travel in an invisible spray for up to eight feet each time you flush the toilet. And if you keep them in a closed container they’re more likely to grow bacteria. So the best way to store your toothbrushes is upright, with no contact with other toothbrushes. Hmm, all of a sudden that mug with your family’s toothbrushes snuggled together is looking distinctly icky.

And being thrifty can actually be fun. No really! We asked Sheila Walkington the money coach for Money Matters and co-founder of the Women’s Financial Learning Centre, for some easy, realistic ways to save money.

And their mums need an extensive education in trucks and trains before they can “get” their tots’ play. But local author, educator and counsellor Barry McDonald is all about boys. His book Boy Smarts – Mentoring Boys for Success at School offers practical guidelines for meeting boys’ varied learning needs.

One of the cool things happening in these topsy turvy economic times (no really, there is some good in all this) is that small businesses are becoming more creative and they’re recognizing the value of collaboration to make good products even better and help spread the word about their goodies. Case in point is the teaming up of two local companies – Milk Factory and Shirtseed.

Nasty things like phthalates and parabens don’t just lurk in plastics, you’ll also find them in skincare products such as lotions, bubble bath and shampoo. That’s why we’re always on the hunt for products to keep our little one’s skin clean and soft without endocrine disruptors and chemicals. We feel that’s not too much to ask.
