get you thinking
Filed Under Going Green, Stuff | February 20, 2009
We’re always on the lookout for safer stuff for our kids to eat from, which is why thinkbaby’s insulated feeding set caught our eye, and it’s quickly become one of our faves. Aside from its appealing orange exterior what’s to love? Well it’s free of BPA, phthalates, lead, PVC and melamine.
And why do you want to avoid all those lovely sounding things? BPA is an endocrine disrupter and potentially carcinogenic; phthalates are also endocrine disruptors; lead’s toxicity can lead to brain and blood disorders; PVC can contain high levels of phthalates; and melamine may cause cancer or reproductive damage. And that’s just the incredibly abbreviated Coles Notes version.
The set, designed for babies starting solids all the way up to school-age kids, includes a bento box with an airtight lid; a soup bowl and baby bowl, both with lids; a mug; and a spoon and fork. The interiors are stainless steel, while the exteriors are made from insulating polypropelene, which means their food is only ever in contact with the stainless steel. And with everything but the mug the stainless steel interiors separate from the bright orange exteriors for better cleaning. And speaking of cleaning, the whole set is dishwasher safe.
While the fork and spoon are just that, the rest of the set is great. The bowls double as storage containers so that leftovers can be popped into the fridge for snack time, plus they are lightweight enough to tot snacks in when you are out and about. While the truly airtight bento box is not quite big enough for a full-sized sandwich, it’s perfect for sandwich fingers or triangles. The handy break in the mug’s handle makes it easy to attach to a diaper bag or stroller handle.
We just wish they sold the pieces separately so we could snag an extra mug, which is by far the most hotly contested item at our dinner table.

I purchased this set for my niece and she absolutely loves it! She is 2 1/2 and it makes her feel like a big girl, especially when she uses the mug. She always sees us drinking coffee or tea and now that she has a mug like ours to drink her water in, it makes her feel like a big girl.
Great product, great price, great job! :)
Thanks!!!
Hello from BC Playthings in Edgemont Village!

We have just ordered these into Hip Baby and they are fabulous! Stainless steel is always a brilliant substitute for both melamine and BPA plastic.
“while the exteriors are made from insulting polypropelene” – I know we there are lots of unsafe products out there but now ones that insult us too???
Dear Fiona,
We noticed your comment and aren’t clear by what you mean by “insulting polypropelene”.
We use save non-toxic materials in the creation of all of our products. It is the reason that we created the company several years ago. The materials used are inert. We chose to wrap the stainless steel products, as all stainless steel seemed a little medicinal. Also we took into consideration that these items might become projectiles in the hands of little ones. So the wrapping is both for insulation, elegance, and for reducing the chance that it dents someone’s nice wood floors.
Feel free to email me directly at the address below.

I’m fairly sure Fiona was just pointing out that rather than most polypropelene being ‘insulAted’, the article above actually describes the product as ‘insulting polypropelene’ which, without the ‘a’, would be an entirely different thing… ;-)
Thanks Tina. You have an eagle eye, unlike our editor. I’ve corrected that & will give her a firm talking to!
