It hasn’t been that long since our babies were, well, babies, but in that scant time it seems that diaper bags, strollers, toys, high chairs, clothes and baby gear in general just keeps getting cooler and cooler. And mum-of-three Leanne Kripp has brought all that cool stuff together at jack & lola, North Van’s first one-stop baby shop that just opened off of Lonsdale on 1st Avenue.

There are so many benefits to wearing our babies, not least the positive impact it has on an infant’s physical, emotional, social and neurological development. Because babies should sleep on their back, it is important to have them upright or on their tummy during the day to develop their cervical spine and avoid cranial flattening. As there’s only so much tummy time one baby can take, a carrier is an optimal way to strengthen their neck and back. Other baby wearing benefits include a decrease in separation anxiety, more efficient daytime naps, a better latch for nursing and a possible minimizing of colic.

It is amazing how one small baby can generate so much laundry. Green pea and carrot puree, spit up – and worse – stained heaps of it. And it all needs to be washed. Traditional detergents aren’t so fabulous for sensitive baby (or adult) skin or the environment. The fragrances and harsh solvents they contain can cause skin irritation and trigger allergies and asthma, while phosphates mess with the eco-system.

We love our readers, which is why we’ve done something special for you this Valentine’s Day. On February 14th you’ll need to come up with cards for all the kids in your child’s preschool, daycare or kindergarten, as well as everyone else they love. Crafty mamas may already be in full card production mode, but if you’re more likely to hit the drugstore to choose from a sad selection of cards bedecked with kids’ TV show characters do we have a Dora and Diego-free solution for you.
