love-ly reads

In honour of this season of love here are some books that encourage love and empathy in your little one, because much as your tots adore chocolate, shaking things up a little with some empathy can only be a good thing.
Hug by Jez Alborough
Using only three words of text and emotionally-perfect illustrations, Alborough tells the tale of little Bobo, a monkey who travels through the jungle in search of his own special hug. Kids will love his joyful reunion with his mommy and an ensuing “group hug” with all his helpful jungle friends.
The Teddy Bear, written and illustrated by David McPhail
Based on a personal incident when the author saw a man emerge from a dumpster holding a teddy bear, this is a compassionate story about a young boy losing a teddy bear and his encounter with the homeless man who finds it.
Enemy Pie by Derek Munson, illustrated by Tara Calahan King
When a terrible boy moves in next door, the narrator’s father recommends serving up “enemy pie”. And one of the key ingredients is the unthinkable – spending a day with the enemy and being nice to him. This is a funny conversation-provoking book on how to turn a best enemy into a best friend.
Yo! Yes? by Chris Rashcka
This award-winner employs only 34 words in a dialogue between two multiracial boys. One and two-word exchanges between the boys convey loneliness, shyness, hopefulness and ultimately excitement as they explore the possibility of friendship.
Helen Moore is yoyomama’s kiddie lit correspondent. Helen is a children’s librarian who is the past Chair of the Canadian Library Association Amelia Picture Book Award. She loves to bring home books from any library to share with her two young sons, ages two and four.
