interrupt winter for some festival fun
It’s Granville Island’s fourth annual Winterruption Festival this Thursday to Sunday and we’re not sure how we’re going to fit all the family-fun into our schedule. Here are our top five picks, and the best thing is they’re all free:
- The Rainforest Procession
Saturday & Sunday, 1 pm, Kids Zone
Mortal Coil and the Carnival Band are teaming up to create a rainforest celebration that includes an eagle soaring above the crowd, dancing dragonflies, big bugs, frolicking frogs and a bounding bear. This rainforest of colour and wonder will wend its way across the island in a magical procession that’s sure to delight kids of all ages. - Sam’s Rot’n Pot’n Pan Band
Sunday, 4:30 pm, Picnic Pavilion
Anyhow who’s grooved to Sam’s Rot’n Pot’n Pan Band’s songs like ‘Your Parents Eat Your Candy’ will want to catch this local three piece band performing in their usual rollicking, frolicking style. - A Circus in Time
Saturday and Sunday, Noon & 1:30 pm, New Festival Garage
Be warned, this megamix of acrobatic, aerial and circus skills from Cirkids, Vancouver’s youth circus troupe, may well have your little one wanting to run away and join the circus. - The Little Old Man
Saturday & Sunday, 3:10 pm, Picnic Pavilion
Theatre Bagger uses Four hands, twelve incredibly expressive rod puppets and an original jazz piano score to tell this Swedish short story this about a lonely little old man looking for a friend in the forest. A huge hit at last year’s Children’s Festival, it’s back for Winterruption. - Pesciolino (The Little Fish)
Saturday & Sunday, 2 pm, Picnic Pavilion
Bella Luna’s bilingual telling of the adventure story of Pesciolino, the brave little fish, includes sharks, mermaids, Pinocchio, Geppetto and a giant whale. Kids of all ages will want to know if Pesciolino finds peace and true friendship, plus they’ll be introduced to Italian words and songs.
Other family-friendly offerings on Saturday and Sunday include face painting, an instrument making workshop, and music shows and workshops for kids .You can download a PDF of the full program at: http://www.granvilleisland.com/sites/all/files/winterruption_program_09.pdf
