this little piggy went ooh la la

Little girls (and lots of little boys too) love getting mani-pedis from their mummies, but nail polish is another personal care item where unsavoury toxic chemicals lurk. Many companies are improving the formulations of their polishes, but for kids, whose fingers you just know are going to end up in their mouths, you don’t want to take any chances. So why not switch to “natural as mud” Piggy Paint?

Developed by US mama Melanie Hurley who was rather horrified when she spilled some of her daughter’s kiddie polish and it ate through a foam plate, Piggy Paint is non-toxic, odourless and free of formaldehyde, toluene, phthalates, BPA, ethyl acetate and acetone.  So what’s in it? Well, it’s not as if the ingredient list which includes water-miscible acrylic and glycol ethers make us think of the great outdoors, but at least the ingredient list is – to use a word of the moment – transparent and easy-to-find.

Not sure you’re a fan of introducing nail polish to your child? Well did you know that painting their fingers and toes can be a learning experience for kids? Rumour has it that it helps promote their fine motor skills, as well as colour and pattern recognition. Wow, nail polish as a learning tool, that’s a new angle.

So far you can only find Piggy Paint locally at online party boutique Green Planet Parties and only in one colour – Forever Fancy Pink, but hopefully they’ll start carrying more colours too, as we can see Piggy Paint in Dragon Toes being a big hit with the boys. Piggy Paint makes a great party favour or Valentine’s gift, and Green Planet Parties also carries  Piggy Paint’s non-toxic nail polish remover which is solvent free.

And strictly in the name of research, we let our tot paint our toes with Piggy Paint and while we can attest to its efficacy as a polish, her enthusiasm outstripped her expertise so luckily it’s sock and not sandal weather.
