What is it with kids and hair? One day they suddenly wake up and washing their hair, which was no big deal, is akin to going to the dentist. And then there are haircuts. If you’re nervous about cutting your child’s hair for fear of recreating the butchered looks you practiced on your Barbie, your child resists the scissors with all their might or fusses and fidgets too much for anyone to get near their luscious locks, then a visit to Melonhead may be in order.
Local mama Melanie Hafez imported the Melonhead idea to Vancouver from Ontario, where they’re already well established as the place to get your kids hair cut. Melonhead is designed with kids in mind, from the arcade-style seating including options for everything from ponies to planes, big screen TVs to keep your tot entranced (and still), and child-friendly stylists, who are often mums themselves.
They’ve thought of mamas too. While your child is occupied you can shop their wall filled with not only hair accessories, but handy gifts for parties and goody bags. And if it’s your child’s first haircut you’ll get a Baby’s First Haircut certificate and a lock of their hair wrapped up for you to treasure.
Little girls’ cuts are finished with a mini updo sprayed with glitter, while boys can choose from among four different colours of spray to top off their look. And not to worry, it all comes out in the wash. If you’ve got family pics, a recital or party on the agenda you can also book an appointment for “party hair”.
Melonhead is aimed at kids all the way on up to about eight, but we have it good authority they’ll even give you a trim while you’re there and the kids are happily absorbed by the books, games and TV on offer. A kids’ cut is $20, and the kids colouring pages on their site also double as a 10% off coupons.
