cleaning up christmas
Filed Under Events, Tips & Tricks | January 6, 2009
If you haven’t started yet then alas, it’s time to get back to real life routines and tidy up the remaining detritus from the holidays. Here are some easy ideas for cleaning up in a more eco-friendly – and possibly fun – way.
Reduce: What to do with all the stuff you got that you really don’t want? Rather than toss it you could consign it – consignment stores will be accepting Spring goodies any day now - freecycle it, or sell it or list it for free on Craigslist. You’ll be amazed at how true it is that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.
Reuse: Get crafty with leftover cards and wrapping paper. Save wrapping scraps for everyday craft supplies but be sure to set aside pieces of red paper or cards for the next big crafty calendar event – Valentine’s day. You’ll need them for all the hearts your little crafter will be making. When you take down your cards why not cut out the pictures and save them to make handmade cards, gift tags, or wrapping next year. You can also cut the words or letters out from the cards and use them to play spelling games or to make signs or labels for toy bins, games, or even kitchen objects.
And don’t leave candy canes moldering in with your ornaments, instead use them to stir hot chocolate, or crumble them and use them as toppings on cookies, ice cream and cupcakes or mix them in with Rice Krispie squares. Yum.
Recycle: If your forlorn fir is still drooping in your living room, don’t despair. Lions Clubs around town are holding chipping events this Saturday and Sunday. If chipping doesn’t fit into your schedule you have until January 31st to drop your tree off at the Vancouver South Transfer Station or Vancouver Landfill. And if the city picks up your yard trimmings they’ll also pick up your tree ’til the 31st.
Here’s to a green(er) 2009!
Speaking of getting crafty, a special thanks to Keri from Craft Caravan for her great ideas.
