Little girls (and lots of little boys too) love getting mani-pedis from their mummies, but nail polish is another personal care item where unsavoury toxic chemicals lurk. Many companies are improving the formulations of their polishes, but for kids, whose fingers you just know are going to end up in their mouths, you don’t want to take any chances. So why not switch to “natural as mud” Piggy Paint?

It’s not only the big Chinese New Year Parade this weekend, but as well as celebrating the Year of the Ox you can also celebrate literacy, the moon and lots more. And don’t forget about our new Going Green section after our events that are farther afield.

In her fifth and final article on the building blocks of self esteem, Sharon Selby, a local child counsellor and the creator of the Phonics Wizard, wraps up her series with competence. How do you raise a child who thinks they can rather than one who believes they aren’t any good?

What do Robert Munsch, ABC and Honda have in common? Family Literacy Day, today, January 27th. Munsch is the Honourary Chair, ABC Canada does all the organizing and Honda is the founding sponsor. Four out of 10 Canadians over 16 have challenges with literacy, but when Family Literacy is practiced it can impact your child’s academic skills – including math – and help develop their imagination and creativity.

What is it with kids and hair? One day they suddenly wake up and washing their hair, which was no big deal, is akin to going to the dentist. And then there are haircuts. If you’re nervous about cutting your child’s hair for fear of recreating the butchered looks you practiced on your Barbie, your child resists the scissors with all their might or fusses and fidgets too much for anyone to get near their luscious locks, then a visit to Melonhead may be in order.

Mums are amazing sources of creativity, plus, in our biased experience they create some pretty great businesses, like Canadian online boutique The Polka Dot Moose. Toronto mum Lindsay Mount, who is the designer behind Tickle Stitch tees and Mobile Mommy slings, kept coming across unique and fabulous Canadian handcrafted goods for kids in her travels, so she decided to create a one-stop online marketplace to showcase them all.

This weekend has two distinctly different themes – Chinese New Year and Robbie Burns Day, though they do come together with Gung Haggis Fat Choy. Plus you’ll find a little bit of literacy. And we’ve got events that extend well into next week as well. We’ve also added a new section to our weekend guide called Going Green that will include green and sustainable events that may not necessarily be family-friendly but have distinct mum appeal, this week it includes Pesticides & Our Children for example. Find it after our Farther Afield listings.

Have you heard about the nifty new Tax Free Saving Account? Us too. But January’s been so busy that we haven’t had a chance to investigate the ins and outs yet. Which is why we asked Sheila Walkington, the money coach for Money Matters and co-founder of the Women’s Financial Learning Centre, to fill in the blanks for us.

The long cold snap has abated, but winter’s still got us in its grip, so we’re always on the lookout for products to keep us extra cozy. Which is why all the feet in our family are snug in socks from Polar Feet.

Do you have a crockpot – aka slow cooker – hidden deep inside a cupboard in your kitchen? Despite knowing that crockpots can save us time, most of us don’t pull ours out all that often. But did you know that crockpots can also save you money as many one-pot meals call for less expensive cuts of meat and they’re also more energy efficient than stovetop or oven cooking? Talk about the perfect accessory for a downturn diet.
