more fun and games

Here’s the last of our holiday shopping lists, part two of our great toy and game suggestions, and this time we’ve also included where to find info if it’s not readily available online. With the economy in turmoil our goal this year has been to think mindfully about presents, not choosing the cheapest ones around, but choosing presents that have longevity, gifts that are “safer” and local ideas.
it’s all fun and games

So far in keeping with our theme of shopping mindfully, buying smart, buying locally and buying the best toys and gifts you can for your child we’ve brought you ideas for personalized presents, gifts that give year-round, and not one but two lists of stocking stuffers . But what’s Christmas without some toys under the tree, so today and Monday it’s all about toys for all ages.

It’s a very festive, seasonal weekend with Santa and the Nutcracker everywhere. For ongoing seasonal events check out last week’s weekend guide, and craft fair season may be winding down, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some good ones this weekend.

What should kids’ clothes be? How about sturdy enough for playdates and sandboxes, yet chic enough for an afternoon on the town? And made in a socially responsible way and tested for safety. Oh yeah, and super cute. All of which describe Danish lines Minymo for kids from two to ten, and Tiny Minymo for tots.

Mums spend a lot of time feeling guilty. Guilty because they may have fed their babes with bottles that aren’t BPA-free. Or guilty because they used the wrong sort of diapers. Guilty because they didn’t wait overnight in line for the perfect preschool. Guilty because they don’t always buy organic veggies. And that’s just scratching the surface.

And being in Vancouver we’re likely to get one too, but we have some eco-friendly ideas for small ways to go greener this Christmas that combine to make a big difference. As with our gift ideas we think being mindful is key over the holiday season, and since most of us are already onboard with LED lights and saving Christmas cards to cut up and use for crafts or gift tags, here are a few more ideas.

This contest is now closed. Here’s our second sponsored contest for December, and thanks to the Granville Island Toy Company it’s a good one. This month the Granville Island Toy Company is giving away two gift certificates, one valued at $100 and the other at $50. Why “click and hope” when you can touch, feel [...]

There are only 20 days ’til Christmas, and it’s time to get down to the actual shopping – if you haven’t already. We thought we’d take a break from our holiday gift ideas and instead share some ideas on how you can set, and stick to, your holiday budget this year. We asked Sheila Walkington, the money coach for Money Matters and co-founder of the Women’s Financial Learning Centre to weigh in with her tips.

How can you tell December is here? Santa and his little helpers are everywhere so be sure to pick and choose your favourite events to avoid overload. Lots of these events are ongoing all month, so you may want to save this email or bookmark this page on yoyomama. We’ve updated our Craft Fair listing too. Santa has probably taken up residence at your local mall for photo ops and while we don’t have a full listing of all the Santa mall sightings we do know you can find him at the International Village Shopping Centre, Oakridge Mall, Park Royal and Capilano Mall. And do let us know if you’ve caught him moonlighting at other malls.
