Move over playdough there’s a new toy in town – PlayMais. It looks a bit like coloured cheese puffs, but is actually made of cornstarch and coloured with natural dyes and it’s also biodegradable, non-toxic and packaged “lightly” without a lot of excess.
So what’s so great about it? Well, it’s seriously low on mess. You just dampen the bricks with the handy little cloth they provide to make them stick together. When you’re all done you just sweep the leftover bits back into the box to use for future creations, or sweep up whatever’s on the floor and compost it. And you won’t find any sticky little bits embedded on your chairs or in the carpet. And while the low mess factor is great, the high fun factor and creative factor is even greater.
We’ve seen it in action with everyone from a tot of three to a granddad of 70, and it’s kept them all engaged. Using PlayMais we’ve created everything from a lump (that’d be the three-year-old) to flowers, suns, castles, crocodiles and foxes. And that’s just scratching the surface of what you can do with your PlayMais. Check out this YouTube video to get a sense the PlayMais possibilities.
You can get PlayMais in different sized general boxes, as well as creative sets with directions for creating a circus, castle or undersea world, among others and prices range from $5.95 to $18.95. We highly recommend it for whiling away dark, damp afternoons or long holiday days. And because it’s truly fun for everyone, we think it’d make a great family present under the tree. But be warned, your creative instinct may be unleashed and you could end up with PlayMais creations taking over your home.
Currently it’s only available in BC at Beansprouts in Vancouver, Bumble Tree in Cranbrook, Kool & Child in Nanaimo and Organically Hatched online.
And while PlayMais is, in essence, edible, we wouldn’t recommend eating it, which is probably why it’s recommend for kids of three and up.

They also have a limited selection at Granville Island toy company on Main Street (so probably on Granville Island as well) and at – I think its called Loomis Crafts on Main one block south of the sky train station.
Thanks for the great post! I bought one as a gift from Beansprout today and am so excited about it.
