sitting pretty

When you have a child it’s a sad fact that so many of their necessities don’t blend with your pre-child décor. And, although there will always be spaces in your home that are designed by or for kids, thanks to the HandySitt high chair from Denmark, your dining room needn’t be one of them.
Like many products out of Europe, the HandySitt is designed with space – or lack thereof – in mind. For kids from six months to six years, it attaches to almost any chair and comes in a range of colour combos from red paired with natural birch to black on black.
And it’s safe. Not only is it made of steel and FSC-certified birch but all paint and varnishes are formaldehyde free. In the interests of safety it also has a phthalate and BPA-free plastic safety bar with a crotch strap that the EU recently ruled to be safer than a traditional three-point lap belt. Though you can get one of those with it too.
What else do we think is great about it? It’s über portable – do you shudder at the thought of sticky, grubby restaurant high chairs? Just fold up your HandiSitt, pop it in the car and at least you’ll know where your child’s seat has been and what’s on it. Because it works for kids all the way up to six, it eliminates the need for a booster seat, and you can also get a StandAlone attachment that converts your HandySitt into a freestanding chair – so it multi-tasks.
We must admit we were a bit taken aback that it had no tray attachment, but Europeans
believe that children should eat at the table with the rest of the family, which makes sense to us. Also, you’ll definitely want something covering your chair’s upholstery and while a towel would do, we feel that milk lush’s myPad has a little more style.
While an older version of the HandySitt has been on the Canadian market before, this recently released, safer version – which is distributed by two local dads – is new in town and only available online and at a few select stores.
