safer storing

So in the last little while we’ve addressed products designed for safer sipping and safer eating but what about safely storing snacks and leftovers? We’ve found a range of options and ideas:

Alfi IsoBottle ($37.95/0.35 L)
But first, a new addition to our safer sipping collection. These stainless steel insulated bottles are leak proof when the lid’s in the closed position – we’ve inadvertently tested them in bed – come in fun patterns and colours and keep liquids hot and cold for ages. Younger kids may not be able to open and close their pop up lids on their own which is not necessarily a bad thing, but older kids will get the hang of it in no time.

Food Storage Container/Lunch Box ($14.95/15 cm, $16.95/16 cm)
This oval, stainless steel container from Canadian company Sanctus Mundo is perfectly sized for packing a sandwich and a carrot or celery stick and works for leftovers too. Not only can it go in the dishwasher, on the stovetop or in the toaster oven, but you can also mark it with (non-permanent) marker so it’s easier to tell what’s lurking in your fridge. A bit big for everyday diaper bag use, we found this better for larger snacks or lunches.

Airtight Food Storage Containers (8 – 14 cms, $16.95 – $21.95)
These stainless steel containers, also from Sanctus Mundo, are our new favourites. The inert silicone seal means you can put liquids in them and they won’t spill. We filled one with water and tossed it around for awhile and not drop came out. The smaller 8 or 10 cm sizes are very similar in size to your average plastic snack container, while the larger sizes are great for storing leftovers. We think they’d make a cool gift for a new mum too, especially if you filled them with a hearty soup or stew.

Wrap-N-Mat Reusable Sandwich Wrap ($7.50)
The Wrap-N-Mat can seriously cut down on your baggie use and your budget because you can use same wrap for lunches for months on end. Though not plastic-free, the wrap’s lining is made of the same material as plastic sandwich bags, just thicker, we feel it’s still a great option. It comes in lots of fun prints and it’s easy to pack up sandwiches, pizza and muffins in the Velcro-fastened wrap and tote them off in your lunch box. Once opened it also doubles as a place mat and it’s easy to wipe down or can be hand washed and air dried too. Though they seal well and keep things fresh, we’re not sure we’d use these for super juicy sandwiches.

What other safe stuff would you like to know about? Let us know and we’ll hunt it down, try it out and let you know what we think.

Better Baby Bums is proud to offer Stainless Seal food storage containers on our site. This is a Canadian company based out of Nelson, B.C. Up until recently we’ve been using Pyrex containers for food storage. This is great for leftovers but not so great for packing along for on-the-go munchies (especially after we discovered the hard way that they do break!). These stainless steel containers come in 8-piece sets (4 containers and 4 lids), either round or rectangular and have been a big hit!
