Although our selection of books for October do have a Halloween theme, they’re tomes that keep on giving way beyond October 31st on sheer story value alone. They’re also a great way to keep the  magic of Halloween alive without resorting to candy:

Vunce Upon a Time by Siobhan Vivian, illustrated by J.otto Seibold
What’s a vegetarian, candy-loving vampire who’s afraid of humans to do when he hears about Halloween? Why conquer his fears of course and get out there for some serious trick-or-treating.  From the creators of Olive the Other Reindeer, you and your kids will enjoy pouring over the illustrations to discover spooky touches like the werewolf hunting sheep and a huge Halloween extravaganza of costumes. Kids as young as two will get a kick out this tale which also helps allay some of the fears tots can have about this spooky night!

Frankenstein Takes the Cake by Adam Rex
If you’re a fan of Frankenstein Makes a Sandwich you’ll want to check out Rex’s newest offering in which the other monsters try and thwart Frankenstein’s wish is to marry his undead bride. Full of rhymes and literary references – look out for the Headless Horseman’s blog, Dracula and Edgar Allan Poe – this is an intricate book which will reveal something new on every read. We’d recommend this one for kids of five and over.

Fairy Tree House by Saviour Pirotta, illustrated by Susanna Lockheart
Not every child goes for the spooky on Halloween, so if you’re got a tot who favours princesses and fairies over witches and goblins, the Fairy Tree House makes a wonderful gift. There’s a lot of fun in this one little box that converts into a multi-level, 3D treehouse complete with with paper doll fairies, projects and an illustrated fairy handbook. This is best for kids who don’t get frustrated with fiddly little things. Younger fairy lovers may prefer this magnetic Fairy Tree House.
