Batteries not included

We’ve been impatiently awaiting the arrival of Sprig Toys ever since we read about them last spring and we’re happy to say they’re finally here! Why the eagerness? Sprig Toys combine all our favourite things – they’re eco-friendly, battery-free, paint-free and made-in-Canada, plus they encourage your kids to exercise their minds and their bodies. Okay, so that may sound compelling from a parent’s perspective, but are they actually fun? Oh yeah!
Sprig has launched with their Adventure Series centered around the Discover Rig which uses your child’s energy to transform it from fun to extraordinary as their play powers its lights, sounds, music and stories. Driven by Adventure Guide Cap Faraday, the Discover Rig takes you on a trek through the African Serengeti where you need to keep your ears peeled for lions, zebras, elephants and even hyenas. Parents will appreciate that it has three different settings too, everything from just lights, to full meal deal lights, dialogue, sound effects and song. And while the Discover Rig is definitely sturdy, we did lose the roof rack during its very first outdoor excursion.
The Adventure Series is made of SprigWood™ , a composite of recycled milk jugs, bottles and reclaimed Pine sawdust that actually smells like real wood. The series also includes the smaller Rally Racer and Baja Scout which take your tots on Arctic and Australian expeditions respectively. They use your child’s pump action to rev their engine and power their lights, but unfortunately you’ll only get the full benefits of their USB equipped Adventure Guides, Rudi Tootin and Miki Flinders, with the Discover Rig. Guides Violet and Edmond can be bought sans vehicle and plugged into the Discover Rig.
Get a feel for how they’re made and how they work by visiting the Sprig site.
Toys that make your child work for what they want. Think of it as the very best form of child labour…

Priced from $33 – $65, the Adventure Series is designed for kids over three – and not just boys – we snagged ours from the Granville Island Toy Company and you can click here for more retailers.
