Safer eating

We know you worry about what you put into your kids’ mouths – both in terms of food and bottles and sippy cups – but what about their tableware?  Sure, plastic plates and cutlery stand up well to the rigorous testing toddlers put them through, but we’ve found some intriguing, safer options for everyday eating:

Quebec company Sanctus Mundo’s products have started popping around town and we think they’re great. They have children’s dish sets – a bowl, plate and mug – in pink bunny, blue dolphin, yellow tiger and green frog versions, all with stainless steel interiors. The exterior is made of plastic, but as it doesn’t come into contact with the food we thought it ought to make the list.

Sanctus Mundo also makes a plain stainless steel children’s dish set including a plate, bowl and cup, and stainless steel kid-sized cutlery, all of which have a certain minimalist je ne sais quoi. Sanctus Mundo products are available locally in person at Little Earth and online and in person at Pinky Blue.

Life Without Plastic is a Canadian site that searches out plastic-free products. They carry beautiful handcrafted laquer children’s sets including a bowl, cup and cutlery made of urushi lacquerware using traditional, and safe, Japanese techniques.

Organic Cherry and Birch wood bowls and spoons from Camden Rose are both beautiful and perfect for beginning eaters. They’re finished with beeswax, and made to last.  You can find them online and in person at Crocodile.

Bambu Home products have been springing up around town recently too. They make everything from sporks (that’s a spoon fork combo) to bowls out of bamboo that’s finished with a food-safe lacquer. You can find them online and in person at StyleKid and Pinky Blue.

Cutlery from Trebimbi is designed to appeal to children’s imaginations and keep them interest in eating.  They combine stainless steel bodies with coloured polypropylene handles – polypropylene is BPA-free – and a bit of whimsy. Some sets click together, others turn into puppets, and they all have friendly little faces on them. You can find them online and in person at Crocodile, Pinky Blue and ModernKid.

And this is just the beginning. What are you eating with? Leave a comment at the bottom article and let us know.

So we haven’t tested every single safer sipping option out there, but we have gone through our fair share in the name of trial and error. If you’d be interested in knowing which of all the options on the market are our faves, let us know, and we’ll devote a column to that.
