What to do, what to do?

The bounty of the fall harvest has this weekend is seriously packed with stuff to do – most of it farther afield – that we haven’t even been able to include all of it. Instead we’ve picked what appear to be the highlights and kept things short! You’ll find bees, apples, community, markets, swap meets, sales and lots more!

Dedicated Email: Your Opinion Please

Filed Under Dedicated Emails | September 18, 2008

Sometimes you have what you think is a great idea, but before you jump in with both feet it helps to get a second, third, or forth opinion. And that’s what’s needed from you. A local mum has a great idea for a mama-centered business, but she needs to know if you think it’s a [...]

Building blocks: security blanket

How we feel about ourselves, or self-esteem, is a critical factor in how we choose our friends, our overall health, our ability to cope with challenges, our career path, our educational success and behaviour. As children develop and continue to experience life, their internal view of themselves also grows. They develop beliefs about themselves which creates their self-concept. Research has shown that the following five elements are the building blocks of self-esteem: Security, Selfhood, Affiliation, Mission, and Competence. And today Sharon Selby of The Phonics Wizard talks Security.

Batteries not included

We’ve been impatiently awaiting the arrival of Sprig Toys ever since we read about them last spring and we’re happy to say they’re finally here! Why the eagerness? Sprig Toys combine all our favourite things – they’re eco-friendly, battery-free, paint-free and made-in-Canada, plus they encourage your kids to exercise their minds and their bodies. Okay, so that may sound compelling from a parent’s perspective, but are they actually fun? Oh yeah!

Bake sale fatigue, raffle ticket ennui

Nobody told us before we had kids that über fundraiser was included in the job. But, from pre-school and the first sports team onwards it’s a whirl of chocolate covered almonds, pledge-a-thons and bake sales. Too often parent fundraising is code for spending time and money. Added to that double whammy, we question the value of consuming stuff we don’t need just to send the kidlets on a field trip. Since parent fundraising seems to be here to stay what can we do so it doesn’t leave a bad taste in our mouth?

Safer eating

We know you worry about what you put into your kids’ mouths – both in terms of food and bottles and sippy cups – but what about their tableware? Sure, plastic plates and cutlery stand up well to the rigorous testing toddlers put them through, but we’ve found some intriguing, safer options for everyday eating.

It’s a multi-cultural weekend with events celebrating Chinese traditions, Mexico, Israel and corn. The moon is a big feature this weekend, as are myriad Terry Fox Runs. Enjoy!

The green party

Filed Under Going Green, Stuff | September 10, 2008

Birthday soirees are hardly the greenest events around what with paper plates, streamers, balloons and goodie bags full of dollar store treasures whose life span is severely limited. And if you choose to go green(er), can it be done so that your party’s remembered fondly rather than as crunchy granola? Local company Green Planet Parties thinks so.

Try to remember

Fall, more than any other, is known as the season of change. Leaves turn colours, kids start school again, crops are harvested, and the change from the lazy days of summer into the fullness of fall begins. The transition into fall, thankfully, is in some ways a slow one, with warm September days and the bounty of blackberries keeping some of that lazy summer energy still alive. And now is a great time to take a moment to consider your own family patterns during transition times

TruKid in town

Filed Under Going Green, Stuff | September 8, 2008

We’re always on the lookout for products that are safer for our kids, ourselves and the environment. TruKid all natural skin care for kids made it onto our radar when we were researching our safer sunscreen column because their SunnyDays Face & Body Stick was highly ranked for safety and efficacy by the Environmental Working Group. As soon as TruKid became available in Canada we snagged ourselves some.
