Book nook

A new kid’s store is opening at 28th and Main today, further cementing Main Street’s rep as a great place to shop for kid’s toys and gifts. Once Upon a Huckleberry Bush is an imaginative lair for young book lovers.
Once Upon a Huckleberry Bush carries books for newborns all the way up to teens, parenting reading staples and toys including stuffed animals from Stephanimals. Creation of mama and bibliophile Portia Belmont, who firmly believes in nurturing the imagination, the store has a corner devoted to a writing room where kids can make up stories based on three objects left in the room. The best of the bunch will make it into print in their monthly newsletter. Twice a week they’ll also be offering stories in store, and keep an eye out for their book clubs designed to help develop reading skills while connecting kids with fellow book lovers.
To celebrate their opening, and in the spirit of both joining the local community while sharing in the global community, author of If the World Were a Village, David J. Smith will be in store from 11 am – 1 pm this Saturday August 16th.
And just so we don’t ignore the elephant in the room, what about Vancouver’s very well established purveyor of books for kids? Belmont feels there’s room for two for a variety of reasons, including the fact that it’ll save neighborhood mums time and gas if they don’t have to trek across town to stock up on tomes for their kiddies. As for us, we feel that there’s no such thing as too many books, or bookstores…
