Usually at the beginning of the month you’d see one of our regular columns from Jenny Schafer of Evolved Parenting. But this month we have a few surprises up our sleeve, so we’ll be saving it ’til later.

Going fishing? Not us. At least not yet. But when we do we’ll start at Discover Fishing BC. This fun, family-oriented site offers all you need to get your little one hooked (sorry, we couldn’t resist) on angling.

What’s so fabulous about fishing? Well, there’s the whole zen aspect of it which gives you an opportunity for undistracted conversation with your kids. And we know we’ve said it before but kids are becoming more and more distanced from nature – despite the fact that they need to have direct exposure to it for their healthy childhood development. Fishing gets them out into the fresh air and helps connect them with nature in part by allowing them to discover the diversity of species all around them.

And if you thought a road trip was necessary to have an authentic fishing experience, think again. Local lakes like Rice Lake in North Vancouver (they have a free learn to fish class this Sunday at 10 am), Lafarge and Como Lakes in Coquitlam, Deer Lake in Burnaby, Sasamat Lake in Port Moody and Green Timbers in Surrey don’t just offer fishing, but also free learn to fish lessons throughout the summer. If you are on the road you can also get a fishing hand at Kawkawa Lake near Hope, Mike Lake in Golden Ear Provincial Park and Wahleach Lake near Chilliwack.

Discover Fishing BC make it easy for you to get started with info on everything from equipment needed, to being prepared, to info on the fresh and saltwater fish of BC. Parents will appreciate that they also provide driving directions and details on the nearest amenities including day-use areas, toilets, beaches and more.

We thinking fishing sounds like a great way to celebrate BC this weekend. You’ll experience our amazing outdoors, our bounty and fun family time. As long as you’re not queasy, like us, when it comes to the next step after catching your fish – but then you could always practice the art of catch and release…

Wow, I hadn’t heard of Dandelion Kids before, but their online store might be a staple for me now!!! It’s so hard to choose what I would get if I won the contest but I could sure see my 3 year old boy wearing some of those funky t-shirts! And that butterfly dress? My 5 year old girl would look adorable in that!
