Singular stuffies
Filed Under Going Green, Stuff | July 21, 2008
You probably had no idea how the stuffies in your household would multiply once you had kids, and despite your best efforts they’ve blossomed into a mini-menagerie. But did you know that child development experts say it’s better for your child to have one special stuffie they can bond with rather than a plethora they form no sort of attachment to? And that’s why we think it’s worth splurging on a Stephanimal’s whimsical creations for your tiny tot’s one special stuffie.
The creation of local artist Stephanie McPherson, each Stephanimal is handcrafted and unique. From an orange sheep with hot pink flowers on its flanks, to a teal lion, to a relatively realistically coloured cow sporting royal purple accents, each animal has a slight twist on reality that kids, with their abundant imaginations, will identify with. And each animal comes with a soft, colourful, handmade story book that educates kids about the animal of their choice, its habitat and how we can help protect their environment, and our own.
Because Stephanimals aren’t just designed for cuddling, their ultimate goal is to help educate children about their environment and connect them to nature. In keeping with that theme, the animals are stuffed with Eco-Fill fibre which is made from 100% post-consumer plastic bottles, while the soft fleeces and chenilles that make her animals so cuddly are remnants McPherson collects from friends and family that would otherwise have been destined for the scrap heap.
Look for Stephanimals at fairs (and soon stores) around town, or check them out online. But be warned, objects online are larger than they appear, so you may want to touch base with McPherson for a sense of size before you buy. You’ll also find blankets, clothes and eco-friendly colouring pages, links and ideas on the Stephanimals site.
And there’s no need to tell your kids Stephanimals are educational, just tell them they need to be loved. . .

The teacher in me gives top marks to Stephanie for her creativity, her educational and environmental contributions and her playfulness in creating these wonderful and whimsical “stuffies”.
I’ve purchased a few of Stephanie’s items and have to commend her on a job well done in the quality of her workmanship. The bib that I purchased from her has been washed several times and it has held up well with not a stitch out of place.
