Audience participation required

Some books lend themselves to cuddles. Some are just lovely to listen to. And some work best with audience participation, interaction and input. This month we’ve got three fun books that will engage everyone from piratical preschoolers to shoe-obsessed toddlers.
The Castaway Pirates: A Pop-Up Tale of Bad Luck, Sharp Teeth, and Stinky Toes writing and pop-ups by Ray Marshall, illustrated by Wilson Swain
As the tension grows in this tale of sinking, stinky-toed pirates so do the elaborate pop-ups that are sure to captivate your kidlet. The tale itself has a nice rhythm kids (and not just boys!) respond to, but it’s the pop-ups – that delight from every angle – that are the real star of the story. And speaking of interactive, get a sneak peek at the Castaway Pirates in this fun video from the publisher.
Doodle All Year by Taro Gomi
Fans of Taro Gomi – author of Everyone Poops among others – and his Scribbles, Doodles and Squiggles colouring and painting books won’t want to miss this newest book in the series. Not quite story book, yet not quite colouring book, your child can doodle through the seasons and stretch their imagination in ways far beyond what’s offered by “regular” colouring books.
Lulu’s Shoes: An Utterly Fabulous Interactive Book written by Camilla Reid, illustrated by Ailie Busby
Lulu loves her shoes, and your toddler will love helping her fasten her pink shoes, tie up her winter boots, stroke her fuzzy slippers and discover Lulu’s most favourite shoes of all in the big reveal at the end. From title to illustrations, this book is definitely girly but definitely fun.
And may we just say, our road trip week may be over, but with the long weekend coming up we wanted to point out that these would all fit the bill for passing time in the car.
