What to do, what to do?
Let’s celebrate BC 150th birthday this weekend. With a plethora of all things historical and musical in honour of our great Province, it’s also the Pride Parade and the Powell Street Festival this weekend. Plus White Rock’s grand Sandcastle competition is making a return!
Audience participation required
Some books lend themselves to cuddles. Some are just lovely to listen to. And some demand audience participation, interaction and input. This month we’ve got three fun books that will engage everyone from piratical preschoolers to shoe-obsessed toddlers. And may we just say, our road trip week may be over, but with the long weekend coming up we wanted to point out that these would all fit the bill for passing time in the car.
More safe sipping
Filed Under Going Green, Stuff | July 29, 2008
We know you’re always on the lookout for safer sipping options, and we’ve got some new ones to add to our existing list. But first a quick recap on why you want to look for BPA-free bottles and cups. BPA, or Bisphenol-A, is found in polycarbonate plastic and can leach into the contents of bottles and sippy cups. It’s a known developmental, neural and reproductive toxicant so we’ve picked options that are BPA-free in all their components, not just the main body.
Talk about multi-tasking
Filed Under Going Green, Stuff | July 28, 2008
We love products that multi-task, they save us time, they save us space and they’re better for the environment. So when we came across milk lush’s myPad whose uses include (but aren’t limited to) airports, ferries, restaurant dining, tummy time, diaper changing, play dates, picnics, arts and crafts, time outs, grocery cart covers and, in addition to all that, is phthalate-free, non-toxic, vegan, weatherproof, machine washable and cute, well, we had to check it out.
Promises, promises…

In the very beginning we promised we’d keep you on top of upcoming registration dates for kids’ activities. Well, we haven’t quite kept our word, we’re blaming it on the fact that we don’t want to think about the fall quite yet as it seems summer just got here. But fall registration is well under way for some activities, and coming up soon for others, so here’s our list of fun activities for kids and when you can get your foot in the door.
What to do, what to do?

Both locally and farther afield there’s masses to do this weekend. You can party in our parks, enjoy lots of old-fashioned fun, shop, get literary and enjoy blueberries, bees and bogs.
All dressed up!
Summer is a great time to put together a dress up box. Older children may delight in putting on a show at a family BBQ, while younger children may dress for dinner in a smashing outfit of their own creation. You’ll find treasures at thrift stores and garage sales. And dress up boxes can even be eco-friendly, as the best places to find dress-up clothes are in your own closets, allowing you to reuse and recycle and breathing new life into your much-loved but no longer stylish handbag.
Banish the babysitter blues
Where have all the babysitters gone? If you’ve discovered that finding a good babysitter is one of the more unexpected challenges of parenthood then you’ll want to join the Lullabye League. Rather like speed dating, the Lullabye League sets up events around town to connect mums with babysitters. You go, you chat, you scope out the sitters, they scope you out and if you like each other then, hey presto! Okay, it’s not quite that easy, but it’s a lot easier than canvassing all the teenagers on your block to see if they might be interested in taking care of your little ones.
Singular stuffies
Filed Under Going Green, Stuff | July 21, 2008
You probably had no idea how the stuffies in your household would multiply once you had kids, and despite your best efforts they’ve blossomed into a mini-menagerie. But did you know that child development experts say it’s better for your child to have one special stuffie they can bond with rather than a plethora they form no sort of attachment to? And that’s why we think it’s worth splurging on a Stephanimal’s whimsical creations for your tiny tot’s one special stuffie.
