A friend is someone special
“You can never have too many friends,” so the saying goes and kids who are starting to navigate the hitherto uncharted waters of friendship will enjoy reading these lovely stories that capture its essence. We appreciate that these books show that a friend may be someone quite unlike you, and can be found in the most unlikely places:
Frog and Toad (series), written and illustrated by Arnold Lobel
Launched in the early ’70s, Frog and Toad are two tweed-coated amphibians who delight in each other’s company. Together, they go tobogganing, plant a garden, eat cookies and wait for the mail while celebrating the seasons and their friendship.
George and Martha (series), written and illustrated by James Marshall
Another classic from the early ’70s, these two hippos have won fans with their sweet friendship containing a mere whiff of romance. Whether bouncing on pogo sticks, chasing Mexican jumping beans, or chickening out on the high diving board, George and Martha weather many ups (and a few downs) of friendship.
My Friend Rabbit, written and illustrated by Eric Rohmann
“My friend Rabbit means well. But whatever he does, wherever he goes, trouble follows.” So begins Mouse’s story that starts with Mouse receiving a toy airplane as a gift and ends with Mouse stuck high up in a tree with his leporine (aka rabbit) co-pilot.
Lost and Found, written and illustrated by Oliver Jeffers
A small boy finds a lost penguin on his doorstep and sets about trying to return him to his home in the South Pole. Along the way, the two discover both the true meaning and quiet pleasures of friendship.

I took my 6 year old son to the Saturday matinee of the play “A year with Frog and Toad” at the Presentation House theatre in North Vancouver. It was absolutely delightful ~ wonderful acting and singing, as well as charming and funny. I highly recommend it! I’ll be getting the book as a follow up for his birthday too.
