Father’s Day

Because dads are notoriously difficult to buy for, we thought they would be equally hard to craft for. So we went to Keri from Craft Caravan for ideas, and actually it turns out that some of dad’s favourite things can lead to great Father’s Day craft projects:

For the grill king: make a marinade jar by decorating an old jam jar or glass bottle with ribbons, stickers, tissue papers and paints. Attach a label that reads ‘Dad’s Secret Sauce.’ Measure and mix up dad’s favourite marinade or spice rub and pour it into the jar. Make sure to have your family’s choice of protein (salmon, steak, tofu, etc) on hand for grilling on Father’s day.

For the home renovator:
hide a special treasure (such as a wrapped chocolate or gift certificate) in a big jar of nuts and bolts. Help dad find his treasure by dumping out the jar on Father’s Day morning. Kids will love filling it up, dumping it out, and sorting it with dad.

For the coffee shop fanatic: make a coffee cozy for his favourite take-away cup. Cut a long strip of felt to fit around the cup, with some overlap for gluing closed. Cut out the words ‘#1 Dad’ in contrasting felt, and glue to the cozy.

For the news hound: make a ‘Breaking News at Our House’ newsletter. Separate a piece of paper into two columns, to mimic a real newspaper format. Include topics under headings such as ‘Breaking News’ (scrapes, bruises, recent art projects, school news), ‘Upcoming Events’ (preschool graduation, visits from the in-laws), ‘Editorial’ (your child’s thoughts on broccoli, clouds, bugs, etc) and ‘Today in Pictures’ (drawings or photos). Interview the kids to get their most important news.

For the sports lover: make ‘Sports Selector’ cards with your child’s drawings of favourite sports. Examples include golf, soccer, baseball, basketball, running, tennis, cycling, rollerblading, and football. Dad can shuffle the cards and ask the kids to select a card. The family can go out and get active with whichever sport was chosen.

And for all dads, you can never go wrong with a plate of chocolate chip cookies, especially if they’re shaped in letters to spell the word ‘DAD’. Yum!
