If you’re attending or hosting a Canada Day event tomorrow and you want to make something that hits the right note for dessert, look no further than this easy-as-pie cake:

Canada Day Flag Cake*

Ingredients:

  • A rectangular sheet cake
  • 2 cups whipped cream
  • 3 cups strawberries, halved lengthwise

Put it all together:

  1. Spread the whipped cream to cover the top and sides of the sheet cake.
  2. Arrange the strawberry halves (cut side down) to make a Canadian Flag with two side bars and maple leaf in the centre.
  3. Refrigerate the cake until ready to serve.

You can make this as easy or as involved as you’d like. If you’re going for easy, buy a sheet cake, pre-whipped cream and fresh, local strawberries. If you have more time and inclination you can make a cake from scratch, whip your own cream and pick your berries. We love berry picking time!

*Alas, we have no photo of the cake, but we have included an image of a maple leaf with today’s article to give you a bit of guidance.
