Hello dolly

When is a dress not a dress? When it’s a Dolly n’ Boo creation. Just one of these beautifully hand-crafted, local creations is both two dresses and a tunic top. How can one dress be all that? Well, it’s completely reversible, which means you get two dresses for the price of one and when you’re out and about should it get dirty you just flip it inside out and hey presto, a clean dress. Because of the long shoulder ties one dress fits a tot from size two to nine, and when it’s too short to be a dress, well then it works as beautiful tunic top. Talk about multi-tasking.

Out with the old, in with the new

The last generation has experienced a shift in parenting methods which can sometimes cause confusion. Research is showing that parenting based on encouragement and attachment is much more effective in the long term than parenting based on fear and punishment which creates short term compliance but long term emotional damage. Sharon Selby takes a look at the way things are vs. the way they were.

Sure, you can organize the myriad pix you have of your tot(s) into photo albums, real or virtual. And yes, you were meaning to go online and make calendars for everyone in your extended family for Christmas. But for many of us the best of intentions often don’t take us very far. For the rest of you – those with their pictures printed, filed, sorted and organized into acid-free, archival paper albums – well, you can stop reading now. If you could use a little help however, look no farther than MonkeyRed Designs.
A friend is someone special

“You can never have too many friends,” so the saying goes and kids who are starting to navigate the hitherto uncharted waters of friendship will enjoy reading these lovely stories that capture its essence. We appreciate that these books show that a friend may be someone quite unlike you, and can be found in the most unlikely places.
Fresh as a (Oopsy) Daisy!

So it’s summer (sort of), you’re out, you’re about, you’re snacking and picnicking on the go but you still want to keep your kids’ hand clean(ish). There are hand sanitizers – around which (false) urban myths have swirled lately – but we much prefer No Bath Bubble Bath – Rinse Free Body Wash from Oopsy Daisy!, which keeps the whole family clean on the go.

Saturday’s the longest day of the year, and it may seem like it if you try and fit in all the fun events happening around town. If you feel like theatre-going, there are also two kid-friendly shows worth checking out – A Year With Frog And Toad A Family Musical at the Presentation House in North Van, and Pirates, Gypsies, Crocodiles, Tinkerbell, Captain Hook! at the Gateway Theatre in Richmond.
Here’s your baby, wear it out
There are so many benefits to wearing our babies, not least the positive impact it has on an infant’s physical, emotional, social and neurological development. Because babies should sleep on their back, it is important to have them upright or on their tummy during the day to develop their cervical spine and avoid cranial flattening. As there’s only so much tummy time one baby can take, a carrier is an optimal way to strengthen their neck and back.
Freedom dining

Do you ever miss your wining and dining pre-kid days? While we love kid-friendly restaurants, we can hardly join in office cooler chit chat about Vancouver’s trendiest eateries when organic mac ‘n cheese is the most exotic item we’ve ordered in ages. ‘Til now that is. Chambar, the cross-town hot spot known for their mussels, their chef and their numerous awards, has just introduced Freedom Nights, which while hardly free, does free you up to do some serious dining without having to babysitter-hunt.
