Cool books for a cool spring
Recently we were lucky enough to get a sneak peak of some of the new kids’ books for spring, and we’ve picked some of our favourites to share with you:
Little Hoot written by Amy Krouse Rosenthal, illustrated by Jen Corace
The premise of this book is so brilliantly simple that we wish we’d thought of it ourselves. Little Hoot’s an owl who’s seriously bummed that his parents make him stay up late and play instead of going to bed early like his friends. Our four-year-old stopped in her tracks when we read, “All my other friends get to go to bed so much earlier than me! Why do I always have to stay up and play? It’s not fair!”
Wave by Suzy Lee
Using just two colours and no words, artist Suzy Lee has created a beautiful paean to both the joys of chasing the waves at the beach and a child’s vivid imagination. Wave will make you long for warmer weather so you can head down to the shore for the day of sand, surf and sunscreen.
Only In Dreams a Paul Frank Book
Okay, so the cynic in us wanted to construe this book as another way of marketing Paul Frank’s products to kids, and yet we were seduced by the whimsical story about all the fabulous things you can do in your dreams. From pirates to princesses to potatoes, this book is brimming with great illustrations and a strawberry-milk river near a frosted-cupcake village that we’d very much like to visit.
Help Me, Mr. Mutt! Expert Answers for Dogs with People Problems written by Janet Stevens, illustrated by Susan Stevens Crummel (they’re sisters)
Chronicling the life of a canine advice columnist a la Dear Abby and his arch-rival the Queen (aka the cat), slightly older kids will find Mr. Mutt’s solutions for doggie dilemmas like too many baths or too few treats very amusing. You might not think the dog drinking out the toilet or pushing the kid out of bed is gut-wrenchingly funny, but, trust us, they will. Plus reading it gives you a chance to read using all your best ‘voices’.
And Happy Earth Day!
